Hydro Arena

The arena now has better and more pleasant lighting

Hydro Arena was inaugurated in the autumn of 2011, making it the tenth bandy rink in Sweden and the first indoor bandy rink in Småland. The arena is the home rink of the elite league team Vetlanda Bandyklubb. In addition to the bandy rink, the facility also houses an ice hockey rink and an outdoor football pitch with artificial turf.

70% energy saving

After a number of years, when it was time to replace the lighting, Aura Light was chosen, together with its industrial luminaires Certos and Loke. All contact was handled by the local installation firm, Bravida, and the work was conducted in the summer of 2018.
"Price and quality were the deciding factors when we chose Aura Light," says Håkan Edvardsson, Hydro Arena.
"We wanted better lighting and a reduction in our electricity consumption – for the entire facility – of at least 10 percent per year. We're very pleased with the new solution, and our saving requirements were met. The overall saving is 11 percent. If we only consider the lighting, the energy saving is a full 70 percent. Both our athletes and our staff feel that the LED lighting has improved the rink environments. The lighting is better and much easier on the eyes."

Popular industrial luminaires

Certos has been installed above the rinks, with the bandy rink alone fitted with more than 160 luminaires. Around the sides, where supporters congregate, Loke has been used. The solution has four different settings, controlled manually depending on how the arena is being used. Full lighting is always used during matches, while certain luminaires are switched off during practice. When the ice is undergoing maintenance, even more luminaires can be switched off to reduce energy consumption to the bare minimum.

Special requirements for arena lighting

Mikael Lennartsson is a lighting designer at Aura Light and was responsible for the arena's lighting design.
"When lighting an arena, it's always important to comply with the lighting requirements for the concerned sport. At Hydro Arena, we followed the guide issued by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions specifying the lighting requirements for different sports environments. We also incorporated the customer's preferences for the arena and combined all this into an effective and functional solution. Important parameters to consider when designing the lighting for a sports facility include, for example, anti-glare requirements, good vertical lighting for TV broadcasts and the most even lighting possible over the playing area. I hope that Hydro Arena can prove to be a good reference case for future lighting solutions within the sport."
