A light source is the technical core of every luminaire. It is the component that actually produces light, and the choice of light source affects everything from the atmosphere and functionality of a space to energy costs and how the colours of your walls are perceived. LED light sources may use less energy than certain older incandescent and halogen lamps, depending on the product and application. But it is about more than energy consumption. LED light sources often have a long service life, which can reduce the need for light source replacements. Modern LED light sources provide instant light and can offer good visual comfort and colour rendering, helping colours in a room appear natural. Luminous efficacy can be described by the relationship between light output (lumens) and power consumption (watts).
LED is currently a widely used light source technology. However, several variants are available to suit different luminaires and requirements.
Commonly used for general lighting. Available with all common lamp bases such as E27 (large screw base) and E14 (small screw base), they are often dimmable and provide high luminous output (lumens).
A type of LED light source designed to mimic the appearance of a traditional incandescent bulb, with visible “filaments.” Often used in decorative applications where the appearance of the light source is part of the design.
Used less frequently today but still found in certain specialist luminaires. They provide warm light but have a shorter lifespan and higher energy consumption than LED alternatives.
A previously common light source technology. They contain mercury and are still used in certain installations.
A light source is the replaceable or integrated component of a lamp or luminaire that produces light, such as an LED lamp or a fluorescent tube.
Start by checking the luminaire’s base type (e.g. E27, E14, or GU10), the required brightness (lumens), and the desired colour temperature (Kelvin). Also verify whether dimmable light sources are needed.
Lumens (lm) measure luminous flux, meaning the amount of light emitted. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and describes the colour appearance of the light, ranging from warm white light (approximately 2700 K) to cool, daylight-like illumination (above 4000 K).
An LED lamp typically has a nominal service life of between 15,000 and 50,000 hours, depending on the product and operating conditions. This is generally longer than the service life of traditional incandescent lamps, which rarely lasted more than 1,000 hours.
