Smarter hospital

Södertälje Hospital in Region Stockholm is one of Sweden's most modern hospitals when it comes to surgery spaces. Here, 1,300 employees work with emergency and specialist care, including childbirth. The hospital is steadily expanding in size, of which the newest treatment building was commissioned in 2017. At the same time, continuous improvement and renovation projects are underway to ensure that the hospital maintains a high standard.

Easy installation

At the end of 2021, Södertälje Hospital wanted to upgrade the lighting with smart lighting control. Previously, there was a mixture of older installations with on-off and KNX control in the various parts of the hospital. As an initial test of how smart control works, some old on-off fluorescent lamps in a corridor were replaced with the LED panel Aura Lunaria equipped with ActiveAhead.

- It was very quick and easy to connect everything, says Fredrik Edenborg, real estate technician at Gunnar Karlsen AB, responsible for maintenance at the hospital. It took us 1.5 days to get the old luminaires out and the new ones in place. We got rid of all the extra cabling and control cables with this solution, it was just a matter of reconnecting for direct current out. In terms of installation, it has been super easy!

Each LED panel comes fully equipped with a built-in ActiveAhead sensor that communicates wirelessly with each other. No extra control cables are needed, plug it in and it starts working immediately. Something that’s a big advantage if you often change and rebuild.

- We have KNX in some buildings and it is quite cumbersome. Here we rebuild all the time and every time we change something we have to call in help for reprogramming and that costs a lot of extra time and money. With ActiveAhead, we make all the changes ourselves on the mobile phone, it hardly even requires training to be able to do it, says Fredrik and shows the app that immediately finds all LED panels in the corridor.

Optimal lighting at all time

With one sensor per luminaire, complete coverage is obtained and a more precise analysis of where lighting is needed for maximum comfort and energy savings. Previously, an open door could block the sensor in a corridor so it wouldn't light up at all. Now that's no longer a problem.

It is not the first time that the LED panel Aura Lunaria has been chosen for a hospital. Its high quality and pleasant, glare-free light make it well-suited to hospital environments. At Södertälje hospital, the pendant luminaire Exzite with pull-dim has also been popular for the offices, especially for shared office rooms, as the staff appreciates the possibility to adjust the lighting above their desk.
After testing smart lighting control in some of the corridors and waiting rooms, Fredrik wants to continue on the same track.

- It has been a success with the new lighting. Better light for the staff and less work for us.
