When will the fluorescent tubes disappear?

During 2023, fluorescent tubes will be phased out in three rounds. On February 24, circular fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent tubes (CFL) with a lifespan of <20,000 h will be phased out. Six months later, on August 24, all T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes and the remaining compact fluorescent tubes will be phased out. Other light sources (such as halogen lamps and low-energy lamps) have already been phased out or will be phased out in 2023, and others in 2027. Does that mean that fluorescent lights will be banned?

The use of fluorescent tubes will not be banned, but the directive means that all new production and import of fluorescent tubes within the EU will be stopped. However, remaining stocks may be sold and you who have an existing fluorescent lighting solution may use these until they are entirely used up. 

Can one still import fluorescent tubes from countries outside the EU?

In addition to that all new manufacturing of fluorescent light sources within the EU will be stopped, the directive also means that it will no longer be allowed to import these from countries outside of the EU. For that reason, sooner or later you will need to look at another, more long-term solution, and possibly replace your luminaires. 

Can one replace fluorescent tubes with LEDs?

In most cases, fluorescent tubes can be directly replaced with a LED tube without any other modifications. This is often an affordable solution where you get good and energy-efficient lighting while extending the lifespan of the luminaire. However, some special HF ballasts and AC tubes may require further adaptations. In many older luminaires, components such as sockets or drivers may be so worn that it is better to switch to a brand new straight away, so check out the fixture and our compatibility list to find the right option for you. 

A long-term lighting solution

The pressure right now to buy fluorescent and CFLs is high and as production naturally slows down, the supply will decrease. For this reason, it is important that you not only plan for the present but have a long-term plan for the transition.
