The Blekholmen tunnel uses Aura Sodinette Long Life

In order to replace light sources in the Blekholmen tunnel it must be closed at night, which creates problems for all road users in the inner city of Stockholm. This problem is one of the reasons that Aura Sodinette Long Life is used in the tunnel.

The Blekholmen tunnel in Sweden is part of one of the tolls where the Stockholm Traffic Office is responsible for operation and maintenance. The tunnel is divided into different stages, with the basic lighting burning round the clock throughout the year. When it was time for maintenance of the tunnel, Aura Light took the time to ask a few questions.

Aura Long Life extends replacement intervals

Hans Ahlin, who works as an installer at Infratek and supervises lamp replacement, explains:

“The Blekholmen tunnel is completely impossible in terms of maintenance, as it is not possible to access during the day. In order to replace light sources, the tunnel must be closed at night, which creates problems for all road users in the inner city.” This problem is one of the reasons that Aura Sodinette Long Life is used in the tunnel.

“Long Life is clearly relevant in facilities such as these, as the lights are on for 8750 hours per year and maintenance requires that the tunnel is closed,” says Marika Andersson, lighting engineer at the Traffic Office. “With Aura Long Life, we only need to change light sources after 5 ½ years, compared to every other year with standard light sources, which in turn means reduced maintenance costs and reduced environmental impact.”

Increased safety with Aura Long Life

Projects such as the Blekholmen Tunnel have a work environment plan in which the risk statement attempts to avoid injury to the people changing light sources. Marika says that Long Life technology is ideal from the perspective of safety because Long Life means fewer changes. In addition, high pressure sodium lamps such as Aura Sodinette Long Life have a high contrast effect, which also enhances safety.

Hans also speaks well of Aura Long Life. “It would be mad not to use Aura Long Life; you don’t have to change so often, replacement costs are reduced and from a safety perspective, you minimize maintenance and the guys do not need to be in traffic as often.”

Marika says that the next step is to use Long Life in the Klara Tunnel entrances as well.
