Södra länken - a new underground road system in Stockholm

Södra Länken is a new road traffic system in Stockholm. It is some 6 kilometres long, of which 4.5 kilometres run through tunnels under suburbs immediately south of Stockholm’s inner city. Södra Länken is Sweden’s largest road tunnel construction ever and the most extensive road project undertaken in the Stockholm region since the 1960’s. A trend within tunnel construction today is to focus on the road-user and not only on operating costs. For that reason tri-phosphor lamps are often chosen in recently built tunnels.

It is very costly and lengthy to replace the 12 000 lamps in Södra Länken. A replacement of all lamps requires the tunnel to be closed seven hours every night for two weeks. With Aura’s Long Life fluorescent lamps there will be significant longer intervals between replacements and both maintenance cost and traffic interruption will be minimized. Therefore The Swedish National Road Administration (Vägverket) and its contractor Tunnelentreprenad chose to install Aura ULTIMATE Thermo lamps with a service life of eight years. The Thermo-lamps are designed specifically for environments where the ambient temperature is low. The unique construction contains a 26 mm Long Life fluorescent lamp cased in an outer glass tube. The outer glass tube provides a thermal insulation which results in excellent high light output at low temperatures.

 - With Aura we reduce our maintenance costs since it’s now longer intervals between lamp replacements. This made the choice of supplier easy, says Anders Ingels, responsible for electricity installations at Tunnelentreprenad.
